Slab Jacking (Mudjacking)
Sunken concrete slabs, driveways, sidewalks, patios, garage floors, and steps, are one of the most common concrete problems in Middle Tennessee. When the soil beneath a slab erodes, settles, or washes away, the unsupported concrete sinks. Slab jacking, also called mudjacking or concrete lifting, addresses this by pumping a fill material, either a cement-soil slurry (traditional mudjacking) or expanding polyurethane foam, through holes drilled in the slab. The material fills the void beneath the slab and generates enough pressure to lift it back toward its original elevation.
Small holes are drilled through the settled slab at strategic positions above the void or settled soil. A pump injects the fill material through these holes under controlled pressure. As the material fills the void and pressurizes, it raises the slab. The lifting is controlled by monitoring the slab elevation at the edges and adjusting injection points to achieve even, level lifting across the settled panel. When the slab reaches the target elevation, injection stops, the holes are patched, and the repair is complete. Traditional mudjacking uses a slurry of cement, soil, and water. Polyurethane foam injection achieves the same result with a lighter-weight material that cures faster and generates higher lifting pressure per unit volume.

How we install slab jacking (mudjacking)
Settlement Assessment and Hole Layout
We evaluate the degree of settlement, identify the void or settled area beneath the slab, and plan the injection hole layout. Holes are positioned to fill the void systematically and lift the slab evenly across its settled section.
Hole Drilling
Holes of 1.5 to 2 inches diameter (for mudjacking) or 5/8 inch diameter (for foam) are drilled through the slab at the planned locations. The smaller profile of foam injection holes makes them less visible after patching.
Fill Material Injection
Fill material is pumped through each hole in sequence. Slab elevation is monitored continuously at key points. Injection is balanced across multiple holes to achieve even lifting without overloading one corner of the slab panel.
Level Verification
A level is used to verify that the slab has been raised to the target elevation and that the transition to adjacent slabs or surfaces is smooth and safe. Final adjustments are made through additional injection if needed.
Hole Patching
All injection holes are patched with hydraulic cement or color-matched grout. The patches are finished flush with the slab surface. While patch marks are visible upon close inspection, they are significantly less conspicuous than the joints in new replacement concrete.
If the slab is solid and just the ground underneath settled, you do not rip it out and pour new concrete. You fill what is missing below it and lift it back up. It costs less, takes less time, and you do not lose the existing concrete.

Slab jacking is appropriate when the slab itself is structurally sound, no major cracking, spalling, or deterioration, and the problem is purely the soil settlement beneath it. A slab that has extensive structural cracking, is severely deteriorated, or has multiple sections at different elevations may be better addressed with replacement.
