Deck Joist Repair Protects Your Family From a Structural Failure
[ 01 ] The Honest Answer
What you should know about deck joist repair
Why Deck Framing Fails
Wood decks are built for outdoor exposure, but no lumber species holds up indefinitely to Middle Tennessee's combination of summer heat, high humidity, frequent rainfall, and freeze-thaw cycles. The deck joists that support your decking boards from below are particularly vulnerable because they sit in a position where water drains toward them, where debris collects, and where air circulation may be limited. Fungal decay sets in quietly and progresses for years before the visible surface shows any sign of failure.
A deck joist that looks sound from above may be hollow at its core. Prodding with a screwdriver or probing with a moisture meter reveals what visual inspection misses. Ground Up Foundation Repair inspects deck framing systematically, identifies every compromised member, and replaces them with properly treated material before the deck becomes a safety hazard for your family and guests.
Deck Framing Components We Repair and Replace
- Deck joists: The primary spanning members that carry the decking load between beams or ledger and beam
- Rim joists: The perimeter joists at the deck edges, which are among the first to show decay
- Ledger board: The structural connection point between the deck and the house; ledger failure is one of the leading causes of deck collapse
- Beam members: The main spanning members that support joist mid-spans or carry the deck load to posts
Deck collapse is a documented, preventable hazard. If your deck shows any signs of structural deterioration, soft spots, visible rot, bounce when walked across, or fasteners pulling through, contact us for a free deck structural inspection at (615) 880-6449.
[ 02 ] How It Works
What to expect, start to finish
Deck Structural Inspection
We probe and assess every joist, rim joist, ledger, and beam, with special attention to the ledger-to-house connection, joist end conditions, and any area where debris or moisture is known to collect.
Repair Scope and Plan
We identify every member that requires replacement, specify appropriate treated lumber for the application, and present a repair plan with a clear project scope and timeline.
Temporary Decking Support
Where deck board removal is required to access the structural framing, we remove decking carefully and support the deck surface during joist replacement.
Joist and Framing Replacement
Deteriorated joists, rim joists, and beam sections are removed and replaced with appropriately treated, properly sized lumber fastened per deck framing standards, including approved joist hangers and ledger fastening systems.
Decking Reinstallation and Inspection
Removed decking is reinstalled or replaced as needed. We inspect all fastener connections and confirm the structural integrity of the completed repair before returning the deck to service.
A deck collapse happens fast and without warning when the framing has deteriorated to failure. We find the structural decay before that point, and replace exactly what needs to come out so the deck is safe for another generation of use.
