Root Barrier Installation for Crawl Spaces
[ 01 ] The Honest Answer
What you should know about root barriers for crawl spaces
Protecting Your Crawl Space from Root Intrusion
Tree and shrub roots follow moisture gradients in the soil, and the area around and beneath a home's foundation is often a high-moisture zone, particularly in homes with crawl space water issues or areas adjacent to downspout discharge. Over time, roots can penetrate vapor barriers, infiltrate drainage systems, and exert pressure against foundation walls and footings. In Middle Tennessee, where mature hardwood trees are common in residential landscapes, root intrusion is a real and underappreciated risk to crawl space systems.
Root barriers are physical membranes or panels installed in the soil to redirect root growth away from the foundation. They do not kill the tree or shrub, they guide root growth in a direction that does not threaten the structure. Ground Up installs root barriers as part of crawl space protection for homes with significant trees within 20 to 30 feet of the foundation, or where root intrusion into existing drainage or encapsulation systems has already been observed.
Signs of Root Intrusion in the Crawl Space
- Vapor barrier that has been punctured, lifted, or displaced from below
- Drainage system performance that has declined with no obvious other cause
- Root structures visible on the crawl space soil surface near the stem wall
- Unexplained cracks in foundation block or mortar joints near large trees
Root Barrier Installation Approach
We install high-density polyethylene root barriers at the appropriate depth along the foundation perimeter or around specific drainage system components that are at risk. Barrier panels are overlapped and sealed at joints to prevent root penetration at seams. The depth and configuration depend on the species of tree or shrub involved and the direction of the root system relative to the foundation.

[ 02 ] How It Works
What to expect, start to finish
Root Intrusion Assessment
We inspect the crawl space for evidence of root intrusion and assess the proximity of trees and shrubs to the foundation to identify the appropriate barrier configuration.
Barrier Design and Material Selection
Barrier depth, configuration, and material are specified based on the tree species, root system direction, and the specific crawl space components being protected.
Excavation and Barrier Installation
Trenching is performed at the required depth along the foundation perimeter or around drainage components. HDPE barrier panels are installed in overlapping sections with sealed joints.
Backfill and Integration
Trenches are backfilled and the barrier top edge is confirmed to be at the appropriate grade level to intercept root growth at the target depth.
Root barriers are preventive. By the time roots are visibly damaging a crawl space, the repair is more expensive than the barrier would have been. We include root assessment as part of any crawl space inspection near mature trees.
