What you should know about crawl space insulation installation

Crawl Space Insulation Done Right

Crawl space insulation is a critical part of a home's thermal envelope, reducing heat transfer between the crawl space and the living space above. But insulation installed in a damp crawl space fails quickly, traps moisture against structural wood, and supports mold growth. Ground Up always addresses moisture first, through vapor barrier installation, drainage, and dehumidification, before any insulation work begins. Insulation installed in a properly dried crawl space will perform to its rated R-value for the life of the home.

The type and placement of insulation depends on whether the crawl space is vented or sealed. In a sealed, encapsulated crawl space, insulation is installed on the interior face of the stem walls and band joist area, making the crawl space part of the conditioned thermal envelope. In a vented crawl space, batt insulation between the floor joists provides thermal resistance at the floor level. We assess your crawl space configuration and recommend the approach that maximizes performance while avoiding the moisture traps that cause conventional insulation to fail in Middle Tennessee's climate.

Why Most Crawl Space Insulation Fails

  • Installed in a wet crawl space, fiberglass absorbs moisture and loses all thermal value
  • Falls down from joist bays over time due to poor installation or pest damage
  • Pest nesting shreds and contaminates the insulation before it can perform
  • Installed before moisture source is corrected, deteriorates within one to two seasons

Insulation Types We Install

For encapsulated crawl spaces: rigid foam board on stem walls provides both insulation and an additional moisture barrier. For vented crawl spaces with controlled moisture: properly supported fiberglass batt insulation between joists. For high-performance applications: closed-cell spray foam on the underside of the subfloor or stem walls provides both insulation and air sealing in a single application.

[ 02 ]  How It Works

What to expect, start to finish

Moisture Assessment First

We assess the crawl space for active moisture sources before any insulation recommendation. No insulation is installed until moisture conditions are controlled.

Old Insulation Removal

Existing deteriorated, fallen, or pest-contaminated insulation is fully removed and disposed of properly before new material is installed.

Insulation Type and Placement Selection

Based on whether the crawl space is sealed or vented, we select the right insulation type and location, stem wall rigid foam for sealed spaces, or supported batt for vented spaces.

Installation and Air Sealing

Insulation is installed and all subfloor penetrations around pipes, wiring, and HVAC boots are sealed to minimize air bypass and maximize thermal performance.

Insulation in a wet crawl space is money wasted. It fails within a season and makes the rot problem worse by trapping moisture against the wood. Get the moisture right first and the insulation performs the way it should.

Crawl Space Insulation Installation questions

Tennessee energy codes typically call for R-19 to R-25 between floor joists in vented crawl spaces, or R-10 to R-15 on stem walls in sealed crawl spaces. Ground Up installs to current code minimums or higher based on the homeowner's energy goals.

Closed-cell spray foam applied to the underside of the subfloor or stem walls provides both insulation and air sealing in a single product and has an indefinite service life. It costs more than batts or rigid foam but is the highest-performance option for Middle Tennessee crawl spaces where air leakage is a significant heat loss path.

In a properly dried crawl space, rigid foam and spray foam have indefinite service lives. Fiberglass batts in a well-managed crawl space last 20 to 30 years. Insulation in a chronically damp crawl space may fail within one to two seasons regardless of product type.

In an encapsulated, sealed crawl space, wall insulation is typically preferred, it makes the crawl space part of the conditioned envelope, protecting pipes and mechanical equipment from temperature extremes. In a vented crawl space, floor insulation provides thermal resistance at the living space boundary. We recommend the approach appropriate for your crawl space configuration.
