Crawl space dehumidifiers are connected to a condensate drain line that routes collected water to a sump pump, floor drain, or gravity discharge point outside the home. Unlike portable dehumidifiers with collection buckets, crawl space units drain continuously and automatically, no manual emptying is required.

Most crawl space dehumidifiers are set to maintain relative humidity at or below 55%. Mold growth begins at approximately 60% relative humidity, and wood rot accelerates above 70%. Maintaining the space at 50–55% provides a comfortable safety margin and keeps moisture levels well below the threshold for biological growth.

Operating costs depend on unit efficiency (measured in pints per kilowatt-hour), how much moisture it must remove, and your local electricity rate. You can, but the dehumidifier will work much harder and less efficiently without a vapor barrier.
