However, an opening this small makes practical inspection difficult and emergency maintenance nearly impossible. We recommend a minimum 22 by 30 inch opening for comfortable single-person entry. Larger openings that allow equipment to be brought into the crawl space for maintenance are better when the foundation configuration allows.
Yes, particularly in a sealed crawl space. An uninsulated hatch is a thermal bridge between the conditioned living space and the crawl space. In winter, cold from the crawl space conducts through the uninsulated hatch into the room above.
