Crawl Space Post and Pier Replacement
In a crawl space foundation system, support posts and piers are the vertical members that carry the load of the main girder beam down to the ground. The original posts in older Middle Tennessee homes were typically wood, either sawn lumber or stacked wood blocks, set directly on masonry or concrete piers. Over decades of exposure to crawl space moisture, these wood posts rot at their bases, lose bearing capacity, and allow the beam above to sag. In some homes, original concrete piers have settled into the clay subsoil, reducing the post height and dropping the beam. Ground Up replaces failed posts with adjustable steel columns or solid-sawn pressure-treated posts on properly sized concrete footings, restoring the beam to level and providing stable long-term support.
Post and pier replacement begins with an assessment of every support point in the crawl space. We identify posts that are rotted, buckled, or bearing on settled piers. For each failed post, we install temporary shoring to carry the beam load before the post is removed. A new concrete footing is poured where the existing footing is undersized or absent. Once the footing cures, a new post, either a pressure-treated wood column or an adjustable steel post, is cut to height and installed. The beam is re-leveled using the new post as the bearing point. After all posts are replaced or supplemented, we walk the floor above to verify levelness.

Installation Process
How we install crawl space post and pier replacement
Support Point Assessment
We inspect every post and pier in the crawl space, checking for rot, lean, settlement, and inadequate footing size. We photograph all conditions and identify the replacement sequence that maintains continuous beam support throughout the project.
Temporary Shoring Installation
At each post to be replaced, we install temporary jack posts or cribbing to carry the beam load before the original post is removed. This shoring ensures the beam does not drop during the transition.
Old Post Removal and Footing Evaluation
The rotted or failed post is removed. The existing footing is inspected for size and condition. Undersized, cracked, or absent footings are replaced with new poured concrete sized for the load and soil conditions.
New Post Installation
A new pressure-treated post or adjustable steel column is installed on the new footing. Post height is measured precisely so that it brings the beam to the correct elevation when installed.
Beam Re-leveling
With the new post in place, we use hydraulic jacks to lift the beam incrementally to level if the original post settlement had dropped the beam. Re-leveling is done in small increments to prevent cracking of finish materials above.
Moisture Control Recommendation
After post replacement, we review the crawl space moisture conditions and provide a recommendation for vapor barrier installation to protect the new posts from the same moisture conditions that destroyed the originals.

In a straightforward crawl space, we typically replace three to six posts per day depending on access conditions, the need for new concrete footings (which require cure time), and the extent of re-leveling required at each location.
Adjustable steel posts in an encapsulated crawl space require no maintenance. In a vented crawl space, checking for surface rust at annual crawl space inspections is reasonable. Pressure-treated wood posts should be inspected for moisture content periodically if the crawl space remains unsealed.
